Summer Research Intern at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

As a summer intern working within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), I conduct research to help prevent exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the workplace that can lead to serious health concerns. Located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research laboratories in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, this U.S. federal agency is a national and world leader responsible for preventing workplace illnesses and injuries. In the Department of Health and Human Services, NIOSH is not a regulatory agency, unlike the Occupational Safety and Health Administration that is a part of the Department of Labor; instead, NIOSH develops recommendations, disseminates information, and conducts research into all types of worker safety and health problems from ladder safety (there’s an app for that) to underground cave tours.
The research I am conducting is on a field portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument that allows for on-site testing of toxic VOCs. In contrast to a benchtop GC-MS, where samples are required to be sent back for testing at a laboratory site, this portable GC-MS device analyzes and provides a rapid response within minutes, making it ideal for same-day reports and emergency responses. To assess compliance with public health and worker exposure standards, our lab is evaluating the thermal desorption sampling system that allow users to wear a small tube that can be analyzed using the portable GC-MS instrument.
Studies being conducted here at NIOSH are cutting-edge and benefiting the health and lives of workers all around the world. When Captain Kirk beams down onto an unknown planet in Star Trek, his tricorder is able to provide a reading on the chemical makeup in his surroundings. I feel that this portable GC-MS research is helping make this science-fiction technology a reality. I would highly recommend applying for a position at the CDC within NIOSH, and I am always available if you have any questions regarding this fantastic summer experience.
