I am interning for Savannah River Remediation (SRR), Contractor for the Department of Energy for Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, South Carolina (SC) this summer. SRS, owned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), was originally built during the 1950s to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons. SRS area covers over 310 square miles and employs more than 10,000 people. SRS is huge site and there for the site is contracted to various companies for different tasks. Savannah River Remediation (SRR) is the liquid waste operations contractor. SRR is a created from team of companies led by URS Corp.

I work for the Process Control Engineering group within SRR which is responsible for technical designs, testing and implementing production systems, providing technical solutions and technical support for the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). DWPF is a plant which takes in the high level radioactive waste (sludge) from waste tanks and transforms the high level sludge waste into solid glass through the process known as vitrification. The department I work for works on various projects which assist in keeping the DWPF plant running day to day. I have been given several interesting projects which challenge me to learn something new every day. There are many interesting projects and everyday there is an opportunity available to learn something new. The management is very encouraging and people working at the site are very friendly. There is always someone there to help when you need it. This internship has been a really good experience so far as it not only provides an industrial aspect of engineering but also allows me to expand my horizon into nuclear industry.
