Product Development Intern at Tyco Electronics

This summer I’m interning at TE Connectivity, one of the nation’s top innovation companies. TE designs and manufactures connectivity and sensor solutions for a variety of industries including automotive, industrial equipment, data communication systems, aerospace, defense, oil and gas, consumer electronics, energy and subsea communications. They serve customers in over 150 countries.I’m working specifically in their ICT department which stands for Industrial & Commercial Transportation. So we work with basically every form of transportation except cars, so trucks, buses, boats, etc… Some of our main customers are John Deere, Caterpillar, and Volvo Trucks. I am responsible for the design and development of connectors, cable assemblies, and other electro-mechanical products for TE. I mostly do a lot of modeling, but I also get to build and test prototypes. I develop products by translating a customer requirement into a product requirement.Usually during summer internships, you’re given one big project to work on all summer. The thing that I like most about TE is that my internship isn’t like that. Instead of having to work on the same project all summer, I get to work on a lot of smaller projects. So I’m not stuck doing the same thing every day. I’ve also had the opportunity to take a couple of Advanced Modeling courses, which have definitely helped me grow as a designer. Before this internship, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do when I graduated, but now, I’m 100% positive that I want to be a designer. I love being able to design and develop new models as well as make innovations on current models. A few of my designs are already being used, and it feels great knowing that I have been able to contribute to this great company.
